My Collection of Angels

For anyone who’s read my newly released young adult novel Angelhood, it will probably come as no surprise that I collect angels. Not real angels, of course—although I like to think my real guardian angel is always near. Rather, I collect angel decorations. I’m not sure how or when it started. I know I was given a couple of those Willow Tree angel statues from a few different people, and they keep watch over my living room corner table.

And then there’s the blue and white throw I was given as a gift. It has the quintessential depiction of a guardian angel keeping watch over two little children crossing a bridge over a stream.IMG_4370

Teacher gifts seem to be wrought with angels, especially if you teach in a Christian school at Christmas time. I’ve got a little red angel with my name on it.

By the time I visited Germany in 2005, I must have had enough angel ornaments that I began to think of them as being like a little collection. Therefore, when we stopped in the little town of Rothenburg, Germany, and visited one of the largest Christmas shops in the world, I made it a point to pick out a pretty angel ornament.

After that trip, I began to shop for other angel ornaments as I continued to travel. In Bath, England, I picked up a pretty clear one.

At the cathedral in Canterbury, England, I picked up a delicate white and clear angel.

Just this past spring break in Guatemala, I picked up a hand-beaded little angel key ring that I’ll hang on my Christmas tree this year.

It’s gotten to the point that I dedicate a whole section of my tree just to angel ornaments. What’s the attraction? I guess I’ve always been fascinated by them. They seem almost too good to be true. Sure, God loves us, and He’s always with us. But we get an angel, too? Bonus! And I guess I like having angel decorations around my home to remind me that they are always there, that God’s always keeping a loving eye out for me.
