VAM Polished coverToday’s guest is Christine Lindsay who discusses the inspiration behind Veiled at Midnight, the third book in her multi-award-winning Twilight of the British Raj series that began with Shadowed in Silk and Captured by Moonlight. Christine will give ebook copies of all three novels to one lucky commenter. See below for details.

What sparked your idea for the book Veiled at Midnight?

The idea started way back when Book 1 Shadowed in Silk in this 3-book series was released. Readers wanted more of these characters. But there was something in Shadowed in Silk that I wanted to see redeemed in the last book Veiled at Midnight—that was the subject of healing from alcoholism. So I allowed the beloved son Cam, who was only three years old in the first book, to suffer through an inherited addiction to alcohol.

How can you have a hero that is an alcoholic?

Cam memeVery, very carefully. Cam is a hero in every sense, and though you might want to clobber him over the head, by the first chapter you will also see that this is a hero to root for, especially as he is about to enter a Big Love Story with the Indian beauty Dassah, and that they will be torn apart by terrible hostilities as Britain pulls out of Colonial India in 1946.

What surprised you most as you wrote Veiled at Midnight?

Where my second set of heroes were going. In my full-length novels I usually have two romances going on. It’s Cam’s sister Miriam’s love story that held big surprises for me. I just never expected her to do what she did at the end of the book. What can I say, the girl’s got spunk.

What is something unexpected one of your characters did?

Dassah, my Indian beauty, surprised me too. At first she seems shy, easily swayed by her love for Cam. By the middle of the book though, she shows the strength of her womanhood, and Cam has to fight with everything he’s got to win her back. Dassah’s courage at such a terrible time in British/Indian history takes my breath away.

Explosive and Passionate Finale to Christine’s multi-award-winning series Twilight of the British Raj.

As the British Empire comes to an end, millions flee to the roads. Caught up in the turbulent wake is Captain Cam Fraser, his sister Miriam, and the beautiful Indian Dassah.

Cam has never been able to put Dassah from his mind, ever since the days when he played with the orphans at the mission as a boy. But a British officer and the aide to the last viceroy cannot marry a poor Indian woman, can he?

As this becomes clear to Dassah, she has no option but to run. Cam may hold her heart—but she cannot let him break it again.

Miriam rails against the separation of the land of her birth, but is Lieutenant Colonel Jack Sunderland her soulmate or a distraction from what God has called her to do?

The 1947 Partition has separated the country these three love…but can they find their true homes before it separates them forever?
