I read just about everything I could get my hands on as a child. Beverly Cleary and Matt Christopher were the first authors’ names I recognized, and I’d seek out their books at the library and when the bookmobile visited my school.
But my favorite children’s story is The Secret Garden.
Frances Hodgson Burnett published the novel in 1911 after it was serialized in The American Magazine.
Several film adaptations have been made. The 1949 film adaptation with Margaret O’Brien is the first movie I remember remembering–if that makes sense. (Nope! I’m not that old–I saw it on TV.)
I’ve seen the play performed three or four times. The best was at our local theater with a high school friend of one of my daughters starring as Dicken. (The two attended the Osceola County School for the Arts.)
The Secret Garden is my choice for Classic Children’s Story. What story would you choose?
Twenty-Five Days of #BlogMas
My chosen theme for this series of blogposts is Classic of the Day. I hope you’ll join me in these days leading up to one of our most cherished –and classic–holidays.
Oh Johnnie, there are SO MANY! The first one that pops into my mind is Ping by Marjorie Flack so I’ll go with that. Such a fun series, especially this month.
Hi, Sandra. I’ve never heard of Ping or Marjorie Flack so I’ll be heading to Amazon soon to check out that series. Thanks for sharing your fave!
My first choice would be The Railway Children by E. Nesbit. I also loved Beverly Cleary’s books as well.
Hi, Pat. That’s a story I’ve always wanted to read but never have. Isn’t Beverly Cleary a classic treasure? I loved her stories.
