When Candace West was twelve years old, she wrote her first story, “Following Prairie River.” In 2018, she published her first novel Lane Steen. By weaving entertaining, page-turning stories, Candace hopes to share the Gospel and encourage her readers. She currently lives in her beloved Arkansas with her husband Aaron and their son Matthew along with two dogs and three cats.
This month, we’re giving away Candace’s latest novel, Through the Lettered Veil.
I don’t know about you, but that title intrigues me. And the cover is beautiful. I’ve added the book to my TBR list ~ hope you will, too!
The Story
Not all wars are fought on a battlefield. Some are fought in the heart.
Aynsley O’Brien faces a choice—follow her deceased uncle’s demands or fall prey to a ruthless band of brothers whose sights are set on Windy Hollow Farm. Without protection, she will lose it all.
Union Cavalry officer Nolan Scottsdale arrives in the Ozarks to find his family ravaged by the war. Unwelcome at home, he turns to Windy Hollow needing work but finds Aynsley cornered. If he offers his hand in marriage, she may break his heart again.
The entire valley will be embroiled in yet another conflict if Nolan and Aynsley lose the farm. And it won’t be the North and the South—it will be neighbor against neighbor.
While dangers erupt on every front, another war rages in their hearts. If they win the peace, how will they mend the breach between their families? Between themselves?
The truth lies in three letters. If only Aynsley could read them.

You’re very welcome! Thank you for stopping by!
I too love getting letters in the mail. The people I would write a letter to well sadly we have lost touch and I don’t know their addresses anymore.
This book sounds intriguing, romantic, interesting book and great read.
I agree, not all battles are fought on the battlefield.
Would love to read & review in print format.
Hi, Crystal. It’s always sad to lose touch with people. I’ve done the same. Hopefully we’ll all be in the same heavenly neighborhood! LOL!!!!
Oh, this sounds sooooo good!! I do like to get real letters in the mail! Which is why I send all of my insurance clients handmade Birthday cards, and most years handmade Christmas cards. I write something in all of them, too!! I don’t do actual letters much, as you need to get some back to keep writing!
If I remember right, I believe I was once the recipient of a card from you! Always so fun to get something in the mailbox that isn’t junky. Always so happy to hear from you!
yes, sounds interesting
I agree!
I love to write and receive letters. I prefer to write by hand on pretty stationery or note cards. When I was a teen, I received a dozen boxes of writing paper for Christmas from different relatives. Everyone knew I was always writing letters.
Hi, Roxanne. I don’t write notes or letters nearly as much as I used to, but I love to keep notecards on hand for those times when I do. How fun that your relatives kept you supplied with writing paper. I love that!
Love getting letters in the mail!
Me, too, Jodi!
Yes, I love getting letters in the mail, though it’s been awhile since I’ve gotten one. I need to send more! This book sounds so good!
Hi, Laura! Writing letters does seem to be the trick to receiving letters. I need to send out more, too!
With texting, it seems no one writes anymore. I loved getting hand written letters. The last one I got was from my mother years ago. She wasn’t into technology but was old school.
Hi, Julie! That’s a long time not to have a handwritten letter. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with “old school!” We should all make a promise to write one letter to someone this week. (I already know this is not a promise I’ll be able to keep–more’s the pity!)
I love getting letters. Thank you for sharing. Blessings
I do, too, Lucy!
The book sounds awesome! Would love to read it! I love Civil War Novels!
And I totally love getting letters in the mail, or Christmas Cards!! I used to write letters and send a lot of Christmas cards when I was younger. I even had a pen pal in Africa! Now I only send Christmas Cards or Birthday Cards, or Thank You Notes… So sad!
Hi, Paty! I used to have a pen pal in the Philippines but that was a very long time ago. I wonder if anyone still writes to penpals–and I mean write–not email. Thanks for writing to me here (giggling!).
I love getting letters in the mail and i love writing them as well.
I must admit I love getting them more than writing them. Which probably sounds strange coming from a writer! Thanks for stopping by, Maryann!
I love receiving letters in the mail and I love writing them to others also.
This past Christmas I got more cards in the mail than I have ever received! Now I want to send out cards next Christmas :). It is such a treat to receive “letter” mail.
Oh, Betti! That’s so wonderful! What a blessing.
I don’t know when the last time was that I received the actual letter in the mail. Or sent one myself…
Maybe a card with a note in it, but nothing more than that. letter writing is a lost art for the most part I think.
I agree, Patty! May I also just say that I love your photo!
I have a hard time writing letters.
I do, too, Jan. I think it’s because I don’t know what to say. But I truly wish I’d take the time to do so.
I always enjoy receiving a letter in mail, and I quite like writing them too.
Megan, I’m sure the people you write to are so glad that you enjoy writing letters. I think that’s a tremendous blessing and ministry in this day of emails and texts. Yay for you!!!!
I love getting letters as well as writing them.
Hi, Shelia! I’m just going to repeat what I said to Megan (above)–who also likes to write letters–I think that’s such a blessing and a ministry. Yay for you, too!
It is so rare to get a real hand-written letter in the mail these days….hmmm..maybe I should write some!
Hi, Connie! That seems to be the consensus–to receive letters, write letters! (If only I would!)
I love to get a letter in the mail but I have to admit that I’m a terrible letter writer. I enjoy getting an occasional note from my Dad.
Hi, Perrianne! I hope you’re saving every one of those precious notes. (That sounded like a mini-lecture, but I don’t mean it that way. Just that it’s always a blessing to me to come across something written by one of my parents. Treasures, indeed!) Always so glad to hear from you!
