Introducing the Story

Joanna and Blake Hannigan grew up in an angry home and made an all-for-one pact – them against the world – in order to survive. Now that pact may keep them from what they each long for.

While doing community service for shoplifting, Joanna’s walls begin to come down. She wonders if she does have something of value inside of her, but still full of bitterness, she can’t get off the path to self-destruction.

Will a near death experience put her on the road to redemption?

Blake refuses to accept the consequences for putting his brother-in-law in the hospital. He runs from the law and does the unthinkable.

In the face of impending disaster, will Blake’s choices lead to healing?

Unless the siblings realize their pact can’t save them, they may not find the One who can.

Where Healing Starts Excerpt Part 1

I hope you enjoy this scene from Where Healing Starts which will give you a bird’s eye view into the relationship between Joanna and her sisters.

Joanna hid away in a motel for a few days, sleeping mostly. When she was awake, she either cried or got high. She didn’t do much thinking. Not about Nick. Not about herself. Not about anything. She came to one conclusion, though.  The way she had been living her life wasn’t working.

Karen left a message asking why she hadn’t shown up for work and inviting her to come help move Elinor’s things over to James’ place. Joanna figured it might get her in Karen’s good graces again after being absent from her job, so she decided to pitch in. Besides, she was tired of staring at the same four walls of the motel room.

A few hours later, Joanna pulled up to Elinor’s previous apartment. The brick siding and the well-manicured lawn showing its new green provided an elegant appeal to the place.

Joanna lit a cigarette and inhaled. Her tension eased and hands stopped shaking. Leaning her head against the headrest, she finished her smoke, then threw the stub out the window before grabbing her bag and heading up. She doubted Elinor wanted to see her since Joanna had caused a ruckus at the dress fitting and, while she was holed up in the motel, she’d missed the manicure. Holding her breath, Joanna knocked.

Karen opened the door and waved her inside. “We’re still packing. After pizza, we’ll load up and head over to the bed and breakfast. The guys are coming tomorrow to move furniture.” Karen turned and ran into Elinor.

“What is she doing here?” Elinor crossed her arms and glared at Joanna.

Taking a step back, she considered Elinor’s attitude. Why did Karen think it was possible for her to be a part of this family? She didn’t want to hurt Elinor, but she was clueless how to get along. She met Elinor’s glare and her determination to patch things up melted. She smirked. “I can tell it would be better if I left.”

“Wait. You’re making an effort. Let’s see how it goes.”

Elinor holding out an olive branch? She usually held quite the grudge. Joanna hesitated before following her sisters into the bedroom. She was here; might as well follow through.

Haley smiled at Joanna from where she worked. “Hey. Just in time for pizza.” She stuffed a few more books into a box before taping the lid closed.

Joanna laughed. “As long as it has sausage on it.”

“Sounds like a meat lover’s pizza today.” Haley stacked a second box on top of the first one. “I think that’s it.”

They loaded the trailer while they waited on the pizza. After scarfing down their lunch, they headed over to the bed and breakfast. Piling into James’ living room, the women laughed at Elinor’s consternation over where to fit everything. Karen balanced her box on the couch. “So, Mrs. Abbott, where do you want this stuff?”

Elinor shook her head. “I still can’t get used to that.”

“You better. The wedding is just over a week away.” Haley set her box on the coffee table.

“Don’t set it there. That’s some sort of exotic wood.” Elinor rushed over and picked up the box.
